Scribblings On Wednesday

I want to finish planting the garden. First, this yen to update … to have something new coming up when I open “Scribblings”. Besides it is windy and rainy right now. The radar isn’t very encouraging for drying wash either. There’s always tomorrow.

Meanwhile, about the gate being left open, one of my current favorite ideas. We’re not cows, of course not, but we sure like new vista, fresh grass to munch, and the exhilarating lift of romping through the boundaries of the expected chores and routines. And why not? Let me taste a daisy for a change. Let summer begin.

I am concerned that we play this summer. That the hurry of spring planting and of setting up our outdoor living spaces doesn’t start us off in a relentless forward motion. No. I won’t let it. I am going to give my bike a scrubbing and use it. We are going to use the patio for what is is meant for, sitting and dreaming and sunning, as often as possible. It is just a matter of decision. Choice. Right?

Elv and Brad made it possible for me to try again with the garden in a bigger more creative way this year. Besides updating the grape arbor. Elv tilled up more lawn into garden and Brad hauled in rabbit manure, and we added two climbing structures for cucumbers and peas respectively. Elv wanted peas! “I like them raw.” So I got the mind picture of him standing in the garden picking and eating fresh peas off the vine. Perfect. Picture us both out there of evenings in the garden.

Did you know that eschewing mulling (negative thought to problem solve) frees the brain of clutter? That’s very poorly said, but I don’t even like to go into a lot of explanation. A clean heart (forgiveness both ways) provides a clear mind. It’s an open gate. Replaced with prayer and filled with grace, weakness is strengthened. Isaiah 40:28,29.

A mug muffin that combines breakfast and a chocolate craving into one legal dish.

Chocolate Blueberry Mug Muffin

  • 2 eggs (those home grown pretty eggs from Stone Hill Homestead https://lislsid.com/?wref=bif
  • 2 heaping tablespoons 1 To 1 baking flour Red Bob Mills
  • 2 heaping tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 3 drops liquid stevia
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries

Stir all this together with a fork in a large buttered mug and microwave for two minutes. dump on to a plate, slice, butter, and eat with a fork. 400 calories without the butter. Does butter have calories?

My brother Norv and family came to a cousin’s wedding. We had lovely visit times talking about our stories: our childhood memories and what’s been happening in our lives. Here’s another of my favorite ideas. Tell your own stories. The ones you own — those of which you are part of the redemption plot. Let me tell mine. Which stories are you most comfortable sharing? Those that cheapen or criticize others? Or the ones that admit your own humanity and what you learned? Do the stories you enjoy telling redeem or destroy? My sister Evie woke me up to this idea, by being honest about how story, told by those who didn’t own them was hurtful to her. It is really, really difficult to tell someone else’s story without slant. She will gently chide by saying, “But that’s not your story to tell.” I love this. All that to say that Norv loves to tell his own stories with laughter and tears. I was challenged again to tell mine … even those that make me cry sometimes. Healing through laughter and tears.

Norv, Sharon, Jules, Ellie, and Em. Speaking of story …Sharon has a good one. She’s on the other side of cancer. She has always inspired me. Now, even more. She’ll not only tell you about grace, she lives it out.

  1. I’m keeping this around as a reminder to live this summer free and full, right out of the gate, and to tell my own story, not others’! I’ll read it every morning for a while… Kudos to Evie and Sharon, I love their “own” stories!
