The store where I was fern shopping this spring had a huddle of frost damaged ones in a back corner, no doubt destined for the dumpster. I was asked not to tell you how I came to bring one of them home. I watered it again today and am planning to bring it indoors for the winter. It’s the hugest plant with the widest “wing span” I’ve ever seen for a fern.
A fresh batch of spiderlings spread themselves across the outside of the kitchen window screen, I noticed this morning. This called for a vacuuming and cleaning on the patio and front door area and led to some window washing and siding scrubbing. The baby spiders were everywhere. I did think of poor Charlotte and her role of friendship with Wilbur. Sweeping up all her babies. Lisl commented that Wilbur is crying. I had forgotten that part. But I went ahead and swept them all up, anyway.
So when a friend stopped by for coffee today, we sat outside under the trees, close by the ferns, visiting. No spiders anywhere.
