Scribblings, Winter

Cold Snap

It’s bitterly cold tonight. The dry maple I found on the wood pile outside the door will hold fire all night in the stove. Scrabble and knitting ensues here in the living room.

The lakes are freezing over. This is good news for Hayward Wisconsin. There will be ice fishing and snowmobiling when the ice is good. Snow globe-like snowing happens about every other day. The weather folks call this “little to no accumulation”, nevertheless we have accumulated a couple of inches of real snow by now.

Early dark suppers and evenings, become endurable, even cozy when the daylight hours are brilliant with sun on snow light bouncing and reflecting all over the place.

Those are my observations and opinions of our winter weather this year. But I’m realizing that there are quite a few people who prefer last year’s insipid rendition of winter. And they say so, while I’m all noisy and smiling about our delightful cold snap.

Maybe I should tone it down with our customers and neighbors.  I don’t mind the cold. But, I should have a heart. Sub zero weather creates hardship for the elderly. My neighbor lady said that they have many doctors appointments between the two of them and going out is hard for them. I wish they could stay at home and that their care givers would come to them. It’s one of those ways that the old days were better.
