The Garden In January

Listening to Monty Don’s podcast, Gardeners World, today got me outside to see my own garden. What’s it like out there in January anyway?

It’s beautiful! The apple trees are snug and safe in their fences. Aha, the rabbits are thwarted. The chickadees and nuthatches were so happy and noisy in the sunshine.

My pet rose bush was happy to frame the house. I had a flash back this afternoon of more innocent days. Maybe it was the sunshine, but I had a feeling of memory… of those afternoons when the littles are soon going to be up from the quiet of naps and the older ones will be coming home for supper. It was comfortable, not sad, for once.

There’s such beauty in rusty rose leaves against the warm wood and blue snow. Monty says we should go out there every day that we can, even in January. I wonder, maybe a bench in the grape arbor would do.
