What Am I Doing Today?
It’s Tuesday. There’s sewing circle today. I don’t work on my job today, so I could go. I could stay at home and sew up my own comforter top that’s all laid out on the guest bed upstairs. I could sit here by the fire and watch the birds at the feeder. I could sit here and read the “new” Richmond book I found. The lady at the used shop took us back to her workroom and pulled down an armload of vintage books for us. I brought three of them home with me. So I could read all day and not run out of books.
It’s my turn to teach at Sunday School so I really need to study sometime for that. See, so I have enough to do right from my chair: read, study, watch birds and the fire, or scribble. Oh, and there’s that puzzle that I laid out, all ready for the edges to go together. Plus housework at home. There’s always that.
As far as Sewing Circle is concerned, I had two reasons for maybe not going even before Elv called to ask me to run his errand in town. In the first place, my sewing machine needs attention. I keep having to help it get started on seams by turning the wheel a little. Maybe it needs oiling or tightening, I haven’t figured this out. Secondly, I have nothing prepared for food for lunch at Sewing.
What I do need to do today is to pick up Elv’s check and deposit it. So while I am in town anyway, (I’d so much rather stay at home: birds, books, and that comforter upstairs)…since I’m going to be in town anyway, I ought to do the weekly grocery shopping. Which means I should really stay here in my chair by the fire and think through menus to create a thoughtful groceries list. That way, once I get going; I can take my time at Marketplace browsing and reading labels and sniffing out the best meat bargains.
I like Marketplace, because the vibe there is relaxing and much more village-like than is Walmart. But that’s a different story that hardly bears talking about.
So there’s the answer to my question. By the time I get home from these adventures; I will be able to, with a clear conscience, sit down to my birds and books. Sewing Circle will be almost over, anyway. And here’s my twenty minutes of scribbling, to boot!
All of which is lame and rather inexcusable if you are of the mind to believe that Sewing Circle is a church function and should regularly be attended. Don’t misunderstand me; I enjoy SC a lot. I’ll go another time, laying aside every excuse thrown at me to not. Today isn’t it.
