In Praise of Dishwashers

Water Lily on Windigo Lake

I didn’t know I was using up so much time with the simple task of washing up. And it was never done. The drainer was full of clean drying dishes, always. The counters were never quite cleared.

That was before we had a dishwasher. Elv and I spend minimal time in the kitchen. I’m there a bit more than he is each day, and it falls to me to do cleanup as per our arrangement. When he can and wants to, he cooks. I do cleanup. Perfect. But while I was away in Idaho, he was frustrated with the time and patience required to maintain our small kitchen.

Which was part of our reasoning to not add a dishwasher before now … Our kitchen is small by anybody’s standards. But a little Danby seems to be just dandy for our lives. True, I had to rearrange a few things and eliminate a few other things, but what I’ve gained is remarkable.

I have time. I think I have several extra hours each week. The counters are cleared most of the time. I can see my beautiful kitchen for real, all shining and uncluttered. The dishes are literally squeaky clean.

For sure the small size of the Danby is not a hardship. Not for two people’s dishes. And she’s quiet.

I suppose this is lame, but little improvements like enjoying a dishwasher for the first time in my life makes me feel real. Kind of like the velveteen rabbit, I guess. Somehow I’ve arrived. Or maybe it’s gratitude, is all. Whatever it is, it’s working. And Jesus loves me. Have a good week.

  1. I’m happy for you. I love my Bosch too! We’ve only had a dishwasher in our lives for a couple of years because I really wanted to teach my children the fine art of dishwashing. But now I don’t know what we did without it.
