We’re at the cabin. Nothing happens here. No cars go by. The neighbors don’t play loud music or blow the leaves off their lawns incessantly. No ATVs roaring by. These things don’t really bother me anymore. I’m used to them. Honestly, there’s a sense of community that goes with hearing someone’s radio blasting on a motorcycle puttering through town in summer.
I can wash windows or watch birds. No work requirements, unless you count the endless to-do list that comes with this place in the woods.
Everything happens here. The sandhill crane’s racket carries from over in the field almost a mile away. The aspens whisper together in the breeze and twinkle in the sunshine. There is new growth in the trees that the spruce bug worm infestation tried to kill years ago. Some of those trees actually died and are falling half over. They’re eye sores… The first ones we will tackle when we get up here for that project. The military plays in the sky with tails and loud noises. If you happen to know where to look, you might see one, but usually they’re faster than their noises. Birds of all kinds play in the thickets along the creek and among the tag alder. If I put feeders out, they come in.
A mouse over-ate the green stuff placed in the corners and died quietly on my kitchen rug. Elv took it out before I noticed. The squirrels are using the attic for a den, coming and going at odd hours. I hear them. Bear and deer and coyotes and rabbits wander through the lawns on their way to wherever they go.
We have music and communications with our people thanks to starlink. Elv and I have time to talk and talk about what’s happened at home and what’s next in life. We read and write and think.
We also have a camera trained on the house. That’s how we know about the bear and the deer going through. But it’s also annoying to look at what’s on the camera and I realize that my own coming and going is being recorded. Suddenly I feel like I’m at home hanging out the laundry with the neighbors going by. Same feeling of no privacy. So, I’m having Elv shut it off for while we’re here. Enough of that.
There’s a wild rose growing through the front deck… Has been all summer, because it can and I don’t care. The petunias in red, white and blue that I planted in May are still blooming.
Everything happens here. And we love it.
