It’s Time Again

November 29, 2021November 29, 2021 Arla

It's time to post again. To write the holiday letter, too. And to keep this space breathing and functional, by being here once in a while. This is my place to share opinions, to yelp because I got hit when some other writer shared an opinion, and to share my big ideas. So! Where shall… Continue reading It’s Time Again

Ordinary Riches

November 23, 2021November 23, 2021 Arla

Everybody worried that normal would never come back to us again. But, I'll take this normal. Growing house plants and crocheting mittens are about as ordinary as it gets. I'm relishing this season to the full. Firewood chores and Thanksgiving plans recall traditions from childhood. It's properly snowy and cold. Thanking God for all of… Continue reading Ordinary Riches

Lacey Gets A Doghouse

November 14, 2021November 28, 2021 Arla

Lacey She's a full-fledged rat terrier. The grand-kids found out first. "She nips!" they'd gasp in tears or terror after doing the typical let's run and jump and tease and play with this wonderfully fun-looking, tiny puppy. "I'm so sorry, are you truly hurt?" I'd ask in true concern. At first I wasn't sure what… Continue reading Lacey Gets A Doghouse

November Pleasures and Pursuits

November 14, 2021November 14, 2021 Arla

Elv and I bought our first cook stove fifteen years ago. That one is called a Happy Meal and gives us warmth and meals at the cabin up north. Then this summer we bought another, a Monarch, which also provides warmth besides baking cookies and bread to perfection. That takes care of both my kitchens.… Continue reading November Pleasures and Pursuits

Glass Gem Sticky Corn

November 11, 2021November 11, 2021 Arla

Lisl and I planted two rows of corn in the Stone House garden in June. My row was a variety of sweet corn given to me at a seed exchange last winter by a lady from Two Harbors. Darlene grew up in the Philippines learning to garden for food. Growing her own food in Minnesota… Continue reading Glass Gem Sticky Corn

Cabin Weekend

November 8, 2021November 8, 2021 Arla

We meandered up to Buck Mt today. Wearing orange because it's hunting season over our jackets ended up being too warm. 60 degrees in November is unusual, but we're not complaining. We sat down at the top to listen and look. Lake Superior gleamed and sparkled in the distance below us, a thin line behind… Continue reading Cabin Weekend

At Home In November

November 8, 2021 Arla

I had a whole day at home today, which is the first time in a while. I don't remember all the reasons, it doesn't matter. But it's been good. Amy's pink geranium is finally blooming. Since I have space and south windows I'm wintering her three geraniums in the great room. The great room in… Continue reading At Home In November

“I Will Go Before You…”

October 20, 2021October 20, 2021 Arla

It's day five for our people suffering in Haiti. Another day of anxiety and frustration and  raw fear. If we hadn't had reason to understand unceasing prayer before now, here's a great place to start. I found hope while reading about that last evening that Jesus and His disciples spent together. They'd just finished up… Continue reading “I Will Go Before You…”

A Cure For Jadedness

October 15, 2021 Arla

Have you ever been told by a well-meaning sister or friend that you've become jaded? I was rather startled by it, though. Because in the disappointments of the past year especially; I, for sure, didn't want to become that hard, unhappy person that everyone hoped would stop whining and buck up. Have no drama, be… Continue reading A Cure For Jadedness

Fall Pursuits

October 12, 2021 Arla

I baked cookies in the cookstove today. This is my first baking in this little Monarch and I'm quite pleased. I had no trouble with it over-browning the tops of the cookies as does the old drafty cookstove at the cabin. Besides, cookstove baked cookies are extra special. I really don't know what causes that.… Continue reading Fall Pursuits
